 Marine Operations Assistant (Deckhand) 

Position Overview:
Delta Discovery, a premier ecotourism company based in Empire, Louisiana, is seeking a motivated Marine Operations Assistant (Deckhand) to join our team. This role is ideal for someone passionate about the marine environment, eager to learn, and interested in advancing their career toward becoming a fully licensed captain and future tour operator. You’ll start by mastering boat maintenance, guest support & safety, and daily operations, with structured mentorship to prepare you for leadership in our growing business.

Key Responsibilities:

Daily Tasks:

  • Prepare boats for daily operations, including washing, draining, and ensuring all components are functional.

  • Flush engines to remove saltwater and perform post-trip inspections.

  • Clean and sanitize boat interiors, including seating areas, consoles, and storage compartments.

  • Conduct safety gear checks (life vests, flares, first aid kits) and restock supplies as needed.

  • Remove trash and ensure all equipment is stored properly.

Weekly Tasks:

  • Perform thorough cleaning and organization of boats, shed, and workspaces.

  • Assist with yard maintenance, including lawn care, weed eating, and trash removal.

  • Prepare boats for scheduled trips, ensuring all gear and systems are operational.

  • Attend weekly check-ins to discuss upcoming projects, equipment needs, and lessons learned.

Monthly Tasks:

  • Conduct trailer maintenance, including greasing hubs, checking lights/tires, and inspecting winches.

  • Organize toolboxes and shed, noting any missing items for reordering.

  • Assist with oil changes, filter replacements, and other engine maintenance tasks (training provided).

  • Dispose of waste oil and maintain a clean shop area.

Quarterly Tasks:

  • Inspect and replenish safety gear and first aid supplies.

  • Verify inventory in dry boxes and update boat paperwork.

  • Perform seasonal yard work, such as tree staking and weed control.

Special Projects:

  • Assist with inventory management and organization of camping gear during the offseason.

  • Support electrical repairs and other technical projects under supervision.

  • Collaborate on one-off tasks, such as equipment repairs or facility improvements.

Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in equipment maintenance, marine operations, or a related field is preferred but not required.

  • Basic mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn boat engine and trailer maintenance.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow structured checklists.

  • Reliable, self-motivated, and capable of working independently.

  • Ability to lift heavy objects and perform physical tasks in outdoor conditions.

Work Schedule:
Flexible hours with weekly tasks prioritized on Mondays (pre-trip preparation) and Thursdays (lawn/trash duties). Monthly and quarterly tasks will be scheduled in advance.
